Strategy on Biofuels Flightpath

The international aviation industry has developed a strategy to achieve the industry’s high-level emissions reduction goals. This strategy builds on four pillars, each contributing to a GHG reduction of 50% in 2050 compared to 2005 emission levels. Each of the four pillars requires strong commitment from collaboration between all stakeholders involved:

  1. More efficient aircraft operations.
  2. Infrastructure improvements.
  3. A single global market based measure (MBM).
  4. Improved technologies including deployment of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

In addition to the aforementioned developments to reduce fuel consumption and the offsetting mechanism, there is an urgent need to develop and deploy sustainable aviation fuels for aviation in order to progress towards the established goals.

The European Advanced Biofuels Flightpath initiative aims to get SAF to the market faster, through the development of regional bioports in Europe among other measures. Particular attention will be given to the development of local production capabilities for both feedstocks and the conversion to biofuels, as this supports the European Commission’s ambition to create energy security. The creation of regional bioports will contribute to the realisation of the EU’s Energy Security Strategy, but in addition it will generate regional economic activities and create jobs.

Quantified objectives will be published in the European Sustainable Aviation Fuel Vision and Roadmap.

In order to achieve these objectives, the European Advanced Biofuels Flightpath initiative will:

  • Establish a network of strategic stakeholders for the development, certification, production, distribution and use of SAF.
  • Develop and maintain a European Sustainable Aviation Fuel Vision and Roadmap, with ambitious but achievable & quantified targets for 2030, with intermediate goals and R&D needs.
  • Monitor the implementation of the Vision and Roadmap at European and national levels.
  • Maintain links with the relevant technology and feedstock sectors.
  • Develop and implement a communication strategy to promote awareness of the European Sustainable Aviation Fuel Vision and Roadmap.
  • Make strategic policy and operational recommendations to achieve the goals of the European Sustainable Aviation Fuel Vision and Roadmap.
  • Facilitate stakeholder co-operation in Europe and internationally, as well as representation at events and forums.
